In a shocking turn of events following the historic May 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a mob in Sonarpur. The state, which recently saw the TMC lose power after a 15-year rule, is currently navigating severe political unrest.
Banerjee was reportedly visiting the family of a party worker affected by post-election violence when protesters pelted stones, eggs, and shoes at him. Despite wearing a cricket helmet for protection, he suffered injuries to his face, back, chest, and neck. The West Bengal Police have acted swiftly, arresting five individuals connected to the assault.
Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly condemned the attack, pointing fingers at political rivals, while the opposition has attributed the incident to local unrest against the previous administration.
